Batteries 80D23L / R

80d23l / r

Most Asian-made vehicles use batteries manufactured in accordance with JIS D 5301 "Lead-Acid Batteries for Automobiles" (lead-acid batteries for cars). One of the most common models is a battery marked 80D23L.

What is an 80D23L battery

This is a medium power lead acid type battery model with dimensions consistent with Asian standard. It is designed to be used as a starter battery on various passenger car models, including Acura, Infiniti, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota and other Japanese and Korean brands.

This battery is equipped with ASIA type cone-shaped terminals with a plus terminal diameter of 12.7 mm and a negative terminal diameter of 11.1 mm. The cathode in model 80D23L is on the left.

Decryption of the battery 80D23L and 80D23R

The JIS D 5301 alphanumeric code, which is used to mark batteries, uses the following system:

  • the first two digits are the value corresponding to electrical power. The larger the number, the higher the capacitance and cold scroll current. In this case, the battery capacity ranges from 65-68 Ah, and the starting current is from 490 to 550 amperes;
  • the letter D indicates a width of 175 mm and a height of 200 mm on the battery;
  • the number 23 indicates the length of the body in centimeters (in this case, 23 cm);
  • the letter L at the end of the marking indicates that this power supply has a negative terminal on the left (reverse polarity). For products 80D23R, the minus is on the right (straight polarity).

In addition, the following data should be indicated on battery housings made to the Japanese standard:

  • name or emblem of the manufacturer;
  • a 4-digit code in which the first two indicate the month, and the last - the year of issue;
  • letter designation for battery maintenance:
  • MF - low-maintenance, in which it is necessary to top up with distilled water once every six months - a year;
  • CMF - fully maintenance free batterywhich, under normal operating conditions, topping up the electrolyte is not required. Periodically, you need to check the electrolyte level and, if necessary, add distilled water through a special hole;
  • SMF is a sealed maintenance-free battery in which electrolyte losses are so small that there is no need to check its level over its entire life.

Explanation of symbols

Important! Cheaper MF series batteries eventually lose some of the water in the electrolyte due to plate degradation, moisture loss through the valves during overcharging and overheating. A decrease in their electrolyte level below the permissible value can lead to oxidation of the plates, swelling of the lamellas and their subsequent short circuit or destruction.

The CMF series has an average cost and optimum performance.

The SMF series batteries are the most expensive, but their cost is justified due to their longer life, better resistance to adverse influences such as vibration, temperature rise, periodic strong discharges and overcharging.

General characteristics of the battery 80D23L

If you decipher the marking 80D23L / R in accordance with JIS D 5301, these batteries must have the following specifications:

  • battery voltage - 12 volts;
  • electric capacity (Japanese) - 55 A / h (with a discharge of up to 10.5 v in 5 hours);
  • electric capacity (European) at a discharge of up to 10.5 v in 20 hours (current 3.1 amperes) - not less than 62 A / h;
  • reserve capacity (discharge time with a current of 25 A to 10.5 volts) - at least 103 minutes;
  • the time during which the battery voltage drops to 6 volts during a discharge with a load of 300 A - 3.5 min;
  • charge current - up to 6.5 amperes;
  • charge indicator;
  • dimensions: 230x172x225 mm;
  • weight - up to 19 kg;
  • the maximum discharge current at -18 ° C is more than 490 amperes (when the voltage drops to 7.2 volts after the load for 30 seconds).

Analogs from various manufacturers

When replacing such a battery, you need to pay attention to the polarity of the terminals and the correspondence of the capacity (at least 65 A / h according to European standards) and inrush current (more than 490 A).

The battery is fully compliant with the Japanese technology standard by the following manufacturers:

One of the best models is the FB7000 series battery manufactured by the Japanese company Furukawa Battery, which does not require maintenance, has increased operating currents, an increased by 60% service life, and is also equipped with a built-in color charge indicator. For cold regions, it is better to use the models of this company with the designation FB9000.

Some manufacturers who manufacture 80D23L battery analogs additionally label them with the word ASIA, which means that they meet the requirements of JIS D 5301. Manufacturers such as Asian batteries manufacture analogs of Asian batteries Bosch, AkTech, Feon, Timberg, Optima, Gigawatt, Topla, Varta and many others.
